fuck i'm so jealous. however, my first game was soulsilver, so i consider myself quite lucky to have grown up with arguably the best games in the series (tied with gen 2 itself). hgss gives me such an overwhelming sense of nostalgia it's unreal. it was the game i spent the most hours in, but i never figured out how to get to kanto. i didn't even know there was a second region at all, i guess i just ignored elm's call after beating lance and continued ass raping every living thing with my level 68 typhlosion. it's crazy because most of my memories from those years have completely faded, but i vividly remember some moments of playing that game. walking around in new bark town with my first partner, cyndaquil, reaching violet city, encountering lugia in whirl islands (how the FUCK did i 1. know to go there and 2. actually make it through as a kid without a guide i will never understand), getting stuck in ice path, killing a shiny hoothoot on route 29. the one i remember most clearly was beating lance. i remember exactly where i was sat in the house that day, the time, the weather, where my dad was in the other room, it's all remained so clearly in my head for some reason. i guess that game just had a big impact on me as a kid, more than most other things. like i said, i never made it to kanto as a kid, and just a couple years back i did another playthrough of ss and went through the whole postgame. it really did feel like i was a kid again when i stepped out the ss aqua and into the ports of vermillion. it was all new to me, yet had a sense of familiarity and nostalgia. it was a great experience.
i think the one thing boomers and zoomers can both agree on, is that johto is the peak of pokemon, no matter what year you first experienced it.
