This is honestly what I wanted pokemon to be from the start! These cool designed beasts had to be nothing but complimentary stat blocks, and we dealt with humans with the personality of cardboard.

Let's be fucking real here, having them as pets was a stupid idea. People are more interested in sentient ones like Mewtwo or Meowth. Pets are stupid and unnecessary responsibility, basically another mouth to feed. Also the humans were really dull, in all media except for maybe the manga.
I mean mystery dungeon blew away any pokemon game before it
