I'll try to be as concise as possible about my own Gardevoir story:
To start, I've been playing Pokemon since Emerald was released, but I didn't care much about the Ralts line at first. I didn't really get attached to the line until I got a Ralts in Y, but it was more of a "this Pokemon is super cute and fun to battle with" attachment than anything. Then a little over a year ago, I went through a really rough relationship, and a byproduct of that was that I got really attached to Gardevoirs because they're supposed to be super loyal, caring, protective - basically everything I could ever want in a
wife and more. One thing led to another, and I decided to play Bike Simulator 2014 to breed my own shiny
female Ralts (with comp-viable stats/nature). By sheer luck she was born on Valentine's Day last year, and now I have Sylvia. I called her that because my brother was playing through No More Heroes at the time (one of the characters is named Sylvia), and the name stuck. I went for a shiny since I think the Ralts line looks better in blue, but that's just me.
