The problem is that gen 1, 2 and 3 had a greater level of cool-mon. Rhydon, Nidoking, Gengar, Porygon, Ursaring, Houndoom, Tyranitar, Aggron and Metagross, that type of sharp or blocky design that appeals more to boys appears less after that. You can see gen 3's dex directly trying to appeal to girls with shit like Delcatty and Plusle/Minun. I don't think its wrong for the pokemon to appear 'cool' when they are generally fully evolved. Out of the lion mons, Manectric and Luxray look like inbetween evolutions. Pyroar is a bad design. Solgaleo looks like an actual lion but it has issues.
They really fucking dropped the ball with this thing especially when they decided to make it a mascot of the anime. I can tell they tried to apply his 'make it off' principle with the big eyes but still this looks straight out of Digimon or Monster Rancher.
