The center of town has a stone statue of a Xatu, and touching it will grant you the protections of the Ancients, a collection of ancient souls. If you die, your possessions disappear, and your new body and possessions reappear back at the statue. Dungeons have a similar protection from their Chaos orb to prevent you from getting set back TOO far, and to solve the moral dilemmas of digesting dungeon-sick / corrupted Pokemon.
