RS > DP > BW > XY was largely just a series of incremental changes around the core gameplay, without ever rocking the boat too much. His games were ok, but kinda played it safe for a while. There's a reason why Pokemon has often been called stale by most anyone outside of the core Pokemon community.
Ohmori on the other hand is more of a visionary. I don't appreciate his games breathing down my neck, but I can respect his ideas. SM was super inventive and came with a-lot of fresh ideas. For once they decided to tell a story that didn't revolve around Gym Badges or saving the planet. Island Trials felt purposeful, and the characters of Alola were active members of the community. UBs specifically designed to push boundaries for what Pokemon designs can look like. And so on. That game's biggest failure was thinking that its playerbase was too dumb to finish the game by themselves.
