Not only that, but you barely post in threads anyway, so your partner for each round could try to contact you in it, the thread would 404, and you wouldn't even notice. This wouldn't be the case with an e-mail account.
And lastly, like Octavius said, it's supposed to be a courtesy for your partner to have a much more easier and practical way to reach you than them having to browse a +300 thread looking for you.
