Gen one and two were also made for money's sake of course, but it was made by passionate developers who really loved to make the game, who struggled and who really tried.
Along the line somewhere the spark was lost, you see it more and more as you go through the games, more mons were added to appeal to certain groups, to look cool and badass, to sell merch, to sell sex, and along that line they dropped some of the most important features of the games, and they lost their souls doing so.
