It's only the style that made me raise an eyebrow at first, but it does allow for more fluid, expressive animation compared to how stilted the anime has looked until now. Don't get me wrong, XY had some great animation, but it still had its CG backgrounds and heavy focus on making the characters on-model. The latter is fine and dandy, but there are artistic benefits to not always being on-model. Take animation smears to convey motion as an example.
But really, speed-line backgrounds for the anime was a much greater travesty. It was just a way to avoid making actual backgrounds while keeping character animation to a minimum. Anyone who thinks D&P Ash pointing and shouting a move to Pikachu while the only movement are lip flaps and a speed-line background is better "animation" than S&M Ash just because D&P Ash is "on-model" is an idiot. Probably the same idiots who think that digital anime is automatically better than cel anime because it's more modern.
