I'm 30+ years old and I play competitive since RBY (yes it was a thing), the first simulator was GSC-Sim, after that, someone created Netbattle (damn I miss you) and Smogon was born with it's forum, after Netbattle was gone and shoddy battle flopped hard, Smogon decided to make their own Simulator and since then, the tier-list became worse and worse with every generation.
I'm a very good player, I'm always in the tops at the end of every generation, BUT even a competitive junky like me lose interest in Smogon, Pokemon became too imbalanced and broken and Smogon tries to balance it out, but since gen7 they make it actually worse.
This is the first time that I completely stopped playing competitive right now, I hope Gen8 will get better.
