No, it's not supposed to be Red's team from HGSS (that came years later), it's based on Ash's team in the Orange Islands, just with evolved Squirtle and Bulbasaur. Nothing can beat the joy and pride of a dumb little kid that thinks he's accomplished something special and unique. Also, it was the first time I really built a team rather than just using an over-leveled starter all the way through.
