I've also been curious about this. I like to base my team on having access to most of the HMs without having to use an HM slave or switch a Pokémon out from my party.
For example, I'd have two Water-types on my team. A physical leaning one for Waterfall and a special leaning one for Surf. I'd also have Pokémon for Fly and one for Strength, too.
I don't mind doing it, for me it's kinda part of the adventure with Pokémon and with over 700 Pokémon to choose from it's a relief to have something to restrict yourself by; but I wouldn't mind a change of pace either.
