I know a lot of companies do day 0 patches because you need to submit a game to publishers a couple months before it actually hits the shelves, for things like final testing, certificate stuff, putting it onto carts/discs, distribution, etc. So often companies will cut out something that's not finished, ship that off, then finish it in the time they've got until the game's out.
Day zero patches are often free from the publisher and also don't need months to process.
Still though, it's a first party game (right? I'm not sure of GF's relation to nintendo) so I wouldn't think their process would take as long.
