The point is that threw away a-lot of great ideas for no reason, instead of continuing to build on them. It's not solely about competitive, either. Just playing with friends and having casual battles was substantially better in Gen 6 than any other game. Everything from your friends list to the streetpass was built into the bottom screen.

Game Freak removing shit to replace it with new shit is one of their biggest problems.
