Hoenn > Sinnoh > Kanto >>> Unova/Johto/Kalos
I feel Hoenn was a really well laid out region. It has many shortcuts and ways to get around. The routes offer a lof of exploration and it was fairly diverse in its biomes. Also fuck you water routes were good.
Sinnoh was cool because the geography made sense. It's a cold region overall, but it's not until you head way up north when actual blizzard conditions kick in. Mt. Coronet was nice, because you pass through it multiple times over the game, but it is not until the climax where you actually climb it.
Johto was kind of bad. It really suffered from having Kanto be apart of it. It would have been top tier if it was expanded and if the entire region had Ecruteak's atmosphere.
Unova and Kalos feel disjointed. Like, one moment you're in a swamp then in the next, you're riding through a blizzard. Hoenn was varied like that too, but it felt unnatural in Kalos, as if they were going through a checklist of what areas to put in. Unova felt too restrictive and linear.
Kanto was okay. Kind of bland, but not bad.
