I met this person over cartoon discussion elsewhere on 4chan years ago and chatted with them for almost three of those years. Things eventually got a little more "interesting" if you catch my drift, and we decided to discuss more personal topics, exchanging a fair amount of sensitive information with one another while virtually everyone else ignored us. We never gave each other nicknames for reference, nor even discussed our jobs, education, pastimes, DMs or anything extraneous. It was a connection built entirely on that fleeting concept of mystery and delivered in its most genuine form in an area where it had no place being, occasionally with a sweet exchange of playful jabs aimed at one another, like two coworkers eager to see the other get fired. It was quite enticing to both of us, otherwise such a thing would've never lasted or evolved in the way that did. We never even learned of each other's genders, that stuff didn't matter. Of course we weren't just there for plain old back-and-forth, we both loved the show in question, and during one such hiatus, I decided to leave, returning when it'd re-air like many did. Changing careers, moving out and other personal matters saw to it that I eventually forgot about that place, not returning until years later. By then it was too late, they were nowhere to be found, and with how noticeable they made themselves, it was a quick conclusion to draw. I lurked for weeks, never seeing them reappear. I suppose that was the harshest consequence of neither of us ever deciding to escalate things, but the intrigue and raw fascination with one another on some bizarre interpersonal level always outweighed that risk. This is my first and last time participating in these threads, but it was a long time coming venting this particular facet of my life for good. I've cursed the day that I neglected to return to them when I said I would for years now as my greatest mistake. I hope it wasn't hard on them too.
