The franchise started as cool designs and realized that can be a bit samey, so they peppered in cute designs and they balance each other very well. They give this franchise it's very specific flavor of cool but also cute, in a way that other monster collection jrpgs completely failed at unless it was a blob reskin.

The real crime is Trumbeak, it's the most awful middle stage design out there besides Brionne. Just completely bland and not even cute. It's not realistic, it's not stylized, it's not cool, it's not cute. It say absolutely no flavor. Pikipek and Toucannon are 10/10 birdmons and in game I enjoyed them. But with plenty of good small to big evos, think meltan, poipol, joltik etc. they is no need for awkward filler middle stages that cannot stand alone. All stages are independent species for a reason. They could all standalone and be decent designs. That's the entire point.
