This is a pointless argument. A hedgehog IS a "needle" mouse. More specifically, "needle-nezumi". The year of the nezumi artwork features "nezumi" Pokémon, including Cyndaquil and Sanshrew, and Sandslash. The latter two being, funny enough, based on armadillos or pangolins, or perhaps hedgehogs, but are no more "mouse-like" than Cyndaquil. And yet all appear in the artwork. Are the Japs phylogenetically challenged? No, they're just following a language quirk of their own, where many rodents fall under the category "nezumi". Cyndaquil is a nezumi and falls under the year of the nezumi, and thus fits the nezumi zodiac. Because that follows in Japanese.
