Gym is outside and based in a swamp made up of little islands and slow flowing water channels. You ride lillypads down the current until you hit blockages of branchs/logs and are forcibly dismounted in front of a trainer. After the battle you interact with the branches to dislodge them but the lilypad is washed away too. You are given a choice of lilypads to ride onward, however, some will sink and send you back to the start.
The blockages will flow downstream, eventually settling, to form a walkway to the leaders island.
