The sparkling waters of Fuschia's coast were comforting after so long traveling inland. The salty sea breeze and the distant cries of seafaring Pokémon brought to mind the few fond memories of home that he could recall. Back when they could pretend at being a family. He hopped off his Pokémon and waved to the girl on the beach as she turned around with a start.
“Who…? G-Gladion!” Lillie rushed forward and nearly bowled her brother over with the force of her hug. “I didn't think… whatever are you doing here? Shouldn't you be helping Mother?”
“Just came to check in. Wicke and the others have got everything handled back home.” Gladion gazed out at the sea, in what he imagined was the direction of their seaborne home. “…Needed some space anyways. Despite everything she put us through, it's hard looking at her when she's… you know.” Behind him, Null growled sympathetically.
“Yeah…” Lillie sniffled. “I'm working on it. I went to see Bill, you know. He's making good progress.”
“Smart guy, or so I hear.” He patted Lillie on the back and eased himself out of her visegrip, dusting off his vest.
“He's a genius, and the only man for the job. I can't think of anyone else with experience getting fused with a Pokémon.”
“And he seems alright now? In the head, I mean?”
“Oh, yes, very. He's quite himself.”
“Good. Then there's hope.” He was momentarily distracted by a battle on the water as a Pidgeot swooped down on a Tentacool. “…Hey. You been keeping up on your battling?”
“Hm? Of course! See?” She took a small lavender case from her bag and clicked it open. Four badges gleamed triumphantly within.
“Damn, you're doing good for a couple months' time. Making me proud.” Gladion smirked. “Actually… that was the other thing I came for.” He whistled, and Null came trotting over.
“Huh? Null…?”
“Lillie. I want to see your progress firsthand. Will you humor us?”
“Of… of course!” She reached for a ball and set her gaze on her brother. “Get ready!”
