I think I figured out why everyone hates Gen 3. It has nothing to do with water or trumpets. Perople that hate Gen 3 and love gens 1 and 2 were in junior high/high school when gen 3 came out, and thus Pokemon was uncool. Yugioh wa a cooler alternative and then that was a gateway drug to more weeaboo shit. They came back to Pokemon in Gen 4 because it had been years, they were on the outswing of school, and pick it up because 'Hey, I remember this series from being a kid'.
People who don't hate Gen 3 and defend it with their life are usually people who STARTED in Gen 3, because of financial reasons, because the hype train never quite made it to their po dunk town, etc.
TL;DR
Gen 3 haters are entitles white kids
Gen 3 lovers are hillbillies and niggers.
