As a designer I am absolutely and totally infuriated with how a shitty game manages to get not only a dedicated fanbase but 20 years of sequels and a plethora of side games. The main games are garbage mechanically, the games are inefficiently coded, and there are so many of the "bad" shortcuts taken I can't even begin to list them.
But that's true of a lot of games that make the mainstream market. There are diamonds in the rough, but the fact of the matter is that in most cases a truly good game isn't likely to be marketable or economically efficient enough to generate a good profit.
And no I'm not saying you should shop indie or anything. The indie dev scene has their heads up their ass just as much if not more than mainstream devs have.Basically, the only way I enjoy Pokemon is when I tell my design instincts to shut the fuck up and let me enjoy a stupid game. Some things bother me enough as a player AND a designer, though. SM was very enjoyable, but for everything I enjoyed, there was at least one problem I couldn't shake.
