They both are optimistic and excitable - Both characters have a lot of energy to them, and they love to stay upbeat and keep a positive attitude when they can. For Ash, he is typically positive throughout the anime's history. From running over to Professor Oak's lab the day he receives Pikachu, to becoming excited about the Hoenn region from Harrison, to reuniting with his Charizard in Unova, and his determination to beat Leon, Ash gets optimistic and energetic about a lot of events in his life. For Serena, she is upbeat and excited when she changes her look in XY060, despite just having come out of an emotional breakdown. Serena is also upbeat and supportive of helping out Jessie with Dr. White in XY063. Serena becomes cheerful and runs to Gloire City at the end of XY109, despite having a hard time sleeping the night before. In the same episode, Serena also cheers up her Pokemon by giving them food, boosting their morale. Serena is also optimistic in XY115, when she dresses as Ash, showing how pumped she is to battle as Ash in his place. Lastly, she happily tells Mairin in XY129 that she can help her with whatever she needs. Overall, there are a lot of moments throughout the anime where both Ash and Serena have a sunny disposition, and want to make everyone surrounding them happier and more confident.
