Lillie and lusamine stayed to learn to control their alternate forms, but gladion left and never learned how to deal with it. That's why he has to hold his hand down like it's about to flip out because it's hard for him to control his other form.
They're all related/have the same blood so experiments were done on all 3 of them at the same time.
Guzma doesn't know this, but gladion told them they're up to some shady shit and not to trust them.
I don't know about further purpose of aether and what they're trying to do during the storyline. Maybe skull is trying to find out why they're so shady.
