I like Kanto the best of all regions. My favorite Pokémon games are FRLG.
This is why I like Kanto:
-the games maintain a great balance of exploration and congruity to result in a non-linear experience which is not confusing
-the Pokédex is varied, providing plenty of good options for a team
-the storyline is concise while not being absent, and the stakes are relatively high without being overblown and stupid
-the characters were memorable without being pretentious
I like Kanto the best.
HOWEVER
How GameFreak is treating Kanto is barbaric.
The LGPE games take place in Kanto but GameFreak has forgotten what made Kanto great. The chibi artstyle, the inability to battle wild Pokémon, and most egregiously, the dumbed-down, brainless difficulty level. Pokémon was always easy as shit, it never needed to get any easier.
I walked into a Barnes and noble the other day, and I saw that GameFreak made a Pokémon-themed monopoly set. I was delighted, but I was horrified to find it exclusively used Kanto Pokémon, Kanto locations, and Kanto characters. I looked it up, and apparently there are only 2 editions: Kanto and Johto. I suspect there will never be any more.
As a Kantofag, I am appalled that GameFreak is trying so hard to obnoxiously pander to my crowd. Not only are they failing miserably, but they are simply making Pokémon fans hate us more. Just because I am part of the demographic does not mean I am the whole demographic, and GameFreak has become so afraid to try new things that it now pleases absolutely nobody. They’re essentially taking a shit, slapping a charizard’s face on it, and telling everyone that said shit is what we want. Thanks a fucking lot, assholes.
At this point I would honestly be happy if the next few games were like gen 5 where Kanto was entirely ignored. I feel fucking guilty. I honestly feel fucking guilty.
