It wouldn't be Protect, it'd be Safeguard. Protect implies that the penetration itself would be stopped. It's not stopping the penetration, it's just stopping the status effect that has a % chance of happening as a result of being the recipient of the penetration. Thus, Safeguard is the appropriate move for this - as it prevents status effects but doesn't stop a move from hitting. Protect would be more akin to someone giving him a chastisy belt.
