For a lot of people the "formula" was finally shaken up with Sun and Moon which is still the same but with a new coat of paint. The point again was the formula going stale wasn't a specifically gen 5 thing, as you said gen 4 contributed to it, as did gen 3 before it, and even gen 2 before that.
