The first I ever encountered was a Zubat in Mt. Moon, in FR. I wasn't even aware of the existence of shinies at that point, and my 9 year old brain came to the conclusion that the cartridge must be glitching out, so I removed it from my GameBoy without saving so I could blow the dust out of it and continue from my last save. Years later, when I learned what shinies actually were, I was furious.
To encounter 3 shinies over a lifetime, and be unable to capture 2 of them, is a heartbreak I didn't expect to have to deal with today.
