Gameplay can actually be benefitial to the narrative. They can work together to add to the experience

The difference is that now GF is trying to do more complex stories and more dynamic characters
The problem is that they are not really good at it, and end up info dumping and slowing down the gameplay instead of making it work WITH the gameplay
