Didn't matter if literally nothing else in the story made sense, no other official Pokemon media was doing anything near that scale at the time. All these guys (Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn protagonists) make for such a fun cast, their time together in canon was limited but the billion tonnes of fanwork it inspired since more than made up for it. I understand why Kusaka stopped the trend though because there would just be too many characters at some point. That's why there's a huge canon timskip between HGSS/ORAS and DP, and thus a big age gap between the Hoenn protagonists and the Sinnoh ones.
