Y'know, I'm legitimately of the mind that Lucario would still be popular even if they didn't shill it every few Generations for a little while like they did in XY and stuff. The concept of a Mon with a spiritual bond with it's Trainer is pretty neat. The idea of a Pokémon that was more of a companion and an ally than a magical pet hooked me after watching M08. And a specially-attacking Fighting-type is rare; it would have seen niche use competitively no matter what.
