People HATED the Ash episodes, because he's unpopular and people only watch him for Pikachu.
It's very telling. Ash episodes without a focus on Pikachu did poorly, and Cynthia episodes on a whole did far better than Ash episodes.
It's so pathetic that even in """Ash's""" anime, he's less popular than other characters. 26 years and people still didn't begin to like him.
