So from the looks of things, this utilizes a lot from the game it's based on, but the plot is completely different.
In the game, Tim and Pikachu investigating the missing dad leads into a bigger investigation of the events leading up to his disappearance, who was involved and why, eventually uncovering a conspiracy involving someone manufacturing a drug with Mewtwo's cells that make Pokemon go berserk, and was using it in a bid to start taking over the world.
But for this movie, we haven't seen even a suggestion of this plot line. We've seen an underground fight club, a giant landmass moving (Groudon?), and some Greninja mooks. And if the poster is to be believed, Ultra Beasts may be involved as well. And the supporting cast is completely different too, though it looks like Lucy is a stand-in for Emilia, and Detective Yoshida is a stand-in for Baker.
