I think the biggest factor for me (aside from lore stating it was from ages ago and being found in a desert) is that fossilized coral is usually a chunk with a lot of holes in it, whereas bleached coral is often seen as simply white coral, and Galar Corsola is closer to the former (it's branches are just ghostly ether, it has holes.)
