I got into Pokemon when I was around 7, and at the time I wished I could have the freedom of going wherever I wanted whenever I wanted.
On the evening I would look at the hills from my window and imagine myself going through them with my Pokemon.
That's why I think the travel aspects matters a lot in Pokemon and that routes being large, real scaled and organic is more important than inventing some shitty new battle gimmick for each gen.
I also loved the freedom/travel aspect in the anime (which wasn't limited by technical limitation like the games and thus showed the Pokemon world as it was meant to be), which is why I think the SM anime is pathetic for giving up on it and turning into le school.
