>normal type is used to describe very basic thingsNormal is used as a non-elemental, or wildcard typing. It is often paired with Flying because, in Pokemon lore, the type isn't standalone because nothing just flies.
Yes they abandoned this in Gen 8 because they don't care about these things anymore. If there's a Normal dual type that isn't flying, the design and lore should be significantly stand out and weird, to justify the typing. Pic related is a great example of this.
