Usually keeping a Starter, I consider team composition, and I don't use any Pokemon on my team that I haven't planned to be in my main team.
The only Pokemon I have are HM slaves if the game uses HM's, and any pokemon that I catch or am given I release immediatly (after healing them of course because releasing them after they're injured is too cruel.
Also if I'm adding a Pokemon to my team I make sure they're the right nature.
