To what extent this caring is romantic or not is left up to the viewer, as the pier scene lacks the typical spaghetti spilling of Serena's past crushing scenes. Yet somehow I feel that ANY spaghetti spilling would have been inadequate for the pier scene as portrayed, it felt real earnest the way they talked, staring into each other's eyes, and more cartoonish elements like that would have ruined the entire thing and detracted from the maturity Serena had displayed so far.
So basically it's left up to the viewer, I guess.
