Iron Man is a pretty apt comparison, because in the movies his suit is a metal shell that he has to put on and in the comics it's a liquid stored in his bones.
Just like how the pokemon anime follows different rules from the games. Shit, they don't even come close to accurately portraying sizes in the anime. Ash's Charizard is like 7 or 8 feet tall, and the Charicific Valley episode revealed that it was a particularly SMALL one. It makes no sense to take anatomical details from the anime and apply it to the games.
