Not to kick up a retarded flame war, but I was rewatching XY, and something about the whole Ash/Serena backstory at Oak's lab really bothers me. Ash Ketchum would never, ever act like this.
He's acting like a little ANGEL. He knows what to do to help someone who's hurt, he's polite, he's offering oddly wise pieces of life advice.. This is not the kid we watched grow from OS-DP, but we're supposed to believe and accept that he acted like this when he was younger. It seems manipulative and speaks to the fundamental issue of XY trying to sell us on Serena's crush by making Ash not act like an irascible wild boy, but a cool gentlemanly hero.
By comparison, the glimpse of young!Ash we see at the beginning of JN feels more accurate. He's obnoxious, loud, a little stupid, and despite his interest in Pokemon being great, he overslept and missed his opportunity to learn.
