It tried to be something greater than just, going on a journey with your Pokemon and confronting the evil team to defend the region. A lot of people didn't like the extra focus on the lore behind the Tao Trio, and the ancient civilization behind Unova, but it added to the depth of the region and story.
Actually this topic reminds me of this discussion I had awhile back, on how Gym Leaders are supposed to be the strongest trainers in the region but feel severely weak. I would prefer if the main game focus was starting out your journey, encountering the villainous team, and busting down their bases across the region before the Legendary Pokemon makes it's presence in the story, and then you go back around the region, grab the gym badges, and make your way to the Elite 4.
