I'm not sure if they were actually planning to end things when the started on that season, they just figured at some point that they simply couldn't go on any longer.
And for that, MPM feels incredibly rushed, from its production (I know there's behind-the-scenes issues) to it's character writing and abysmal lack of focus. This is (presumably) the last hurrah for a 20+ year long epic, and they can't get their shit together now, when it counts the most?
