It's funny because people often disguise their hate as "she was too mean to Ash" and yet, May and Misty had more arguments with Ash than Iris.
Another thing that Iris had over literally every other girl is that she wasn't sexualized in any way. No big breasts, no fetishized personality or clothes, hell, even her personality wasn't a stock waifu personality.
