The closest we've had was Brent once found an abandoned Timburr Egg, and after a few days of wafting for the mother/father to come back, he took the egg and gave it to a researcher friend of his (Pic related). Lost Pokemon have a lot of options as to what they could do, its like if a child got separated from their parents, they could be taken to the local law enforcement to ring the family up, or in the case of a stranded or abandoned mon' depending on its 'smarts' it could just capture itself if it wanted to go solo (Pokemon getting jobs are fairly common in this setting nowadays), or it could find shelter/orphanage or just look for a new Human/Pokemon Partner to travel with...or head into the wild and live there. The options are plentiful.
