The fact that writer actually thought Roy being taller , handsome , cool kid that attract girls and defeat Nemona would made him popular proves current writers knows nothing about characterization. This anime is better off with Ash then any of their new OC specially when MPM episode 02 has proven that Ash could revert back to his old self.
Just give him companion that makes him behave like his old self.
