Reminder that in 2001 on a GameBoy Color, this game had near infinite procedurally-generated maps (which also generated towns and dungeons/caves/towers/random overworld events) for you to explore and grind and find new monsters in, and had procedurally-generated teams you could face in the arena in the main hub (usually to unlock keys which unlocked the procedurally-generated maps)
It also had 312 total monsters, all either from the Dragon Warrior games up to the point that this game was made, or were made special by Akira Toriyama just for this game
instead of classifying monsters by bullshit "types" like Pokemon (which turns it into a rock-paper-scissors game for retards), monsters are classified by "family" such as zombies or plants or slimes or devils. There is more of an emphasis on building your monster's stats and using clever strategies in battle (including comboing your monsters actions) instead of "i use the Super Effective move and mash the A-button and win".
The game also has "personalities" as a mechanic, but instead of just giving a stupid 10% stat buff/debuff like Pokemon, it changes how your monsters react to situations in battles and it changes how they react when you interact with them in the overworld.
Rather than breed hundreds of eggs and tossing the crap ones in the dumpster like in Pokemon, parent monsters in DWM2 are assimilated into the egg of their offspring and disappear after one breeding session, which means your bros since the very beginning of your journey could start off as a humble Dracky or a Spot Slime, and end up a Gigadraco or a Poseidon. The game also gives you a family tree lineage that you can view for your monsters too to see where they came from.
But you chose not to buy this game and give Pokemon an actual competitor to keep them honest and still innovating. You chose not to buy a game that, in 2001, has more content than ever pokemon game that came out after it.
