There's something I've been "abusing" on this game and I think it depends on the phone you're using. Not sure how my GPS really works but I think mine uses its pedometer whenever the signal is obstructed (for example, being inside my home).
It works like this: I point my phone towards a direction and start shaking it, up and down quickly (kinda simulating the bounce of walking). I realize that this gets me as far as my gps margin of error, which allows me to walk through all the five pokestops around me as well as get any pokemon from the spawn points nearby. I just spin my chair, skake it and that's it. Being able to catch something on the streets at night without the risks involved is great.
