It could be done if a lot of talented people make their apport, posting the project in a common repository like GitHub, and make it Open Source. It would be very interesting if an Open Source 3D RPG engine comes out of that. You can separate source code and art like ID Software did with almost all their games (Doom being a prime example) and everyone can apport a little bit.
