The show has been trying to push for Pokemon and Trainers coming up with crazy strategies to win battles beyond just using Pokemon as a basic battle simulator like the games. Type Advantage, abilities, and strong moves matter a whole lot less in the anime, and what matters instead if how you use those moves with some creativity.
