Try to win with your favorites, but if you can't, you may need to use pokemon that have a better chance of winning.
The latter may not be necessarily "stronger", they just have a more suitable skillset/stats/ability for the occasion.
It's not the pokemon that are strong, it's the trainer for being skilled enough to use them effectively.
